Ambassador Spotlight ‘Owen Teesdale’

Welcoming latest Brand Ambassador Owen Teesdale from Hampshire & West Sussex, UK!

How did you get into surveying? My interest in surveying started when I was on placement over 15 years ago. I started a civil engineering apprenticeship, and I was fortunate enough to move round different departments to gain a broad knowledge, this was where I had my first experience of surveying. I knew I wanted to pursue surveying whilst and getting hands on with new and advanced technology in diverse environments, I have always loved being outdoors and the opportunity to immerse myself and learn new skills whilst being out engaged me more than being in an office environment.

What are your plans as a Brand Ambassador? I hope to engage with schools through demonstrations, workshops and careers fairs to inspire children by showcasing our technology and the exciting opportunities within geospatial industry.

Tell us a bit about what you do: I’m a Geomatics Surveyor within Coastal Partners, and my role is very much split between hands‑on data capture and managing the operational side of our survey programme. On the technical side, I collect geospatial data using UAVs, LiDAR, as well as traditional land surveying instrumentation, turning this information into accurate maps, models and datasets that show terrain, structures and key coastal features. I also analyse and monitor coastal defences through measured surveys and condition assessments to establish how the coastline changes over time to support long‑term coastal management strategies.

The other side of my role focuses on coordination, responsiveness and quality. I manage our Geomatics Live Works Package, which means the team often has to be reactive — adjusting plans, redeploying resources and responding to changing coastal conditions or operational priorities at short notice. I ensure this work runs efficiently, safely and consistently across the partnership.

All of the data I gather feeds directly into our research team, where it is interpreted and transformed into insights that shape real‑world outcomes.
