The Curious Case of the Mysterious Cryptids – Bringing Geography and Geo Survey to Life
Last week, a group of Key Worker kids embarked on a cross-curricular project centred on cryptids – creatures whose existence is disputed, or considered rumour by scientists. Their objective seemed simple at first; decide whether one of the most infamous cryptids – the Loch Ness Monster – could really exist. A preliminary vote suggested that the overwhelming majority thought ‘no’, but after a week’s exploration, we were no longer so sure of our assumptions…
LITERACY
We began with a literary leap into the mythology of the Loch Ness Monster. From its first alleged sighting by St. Columba in 565 CE, to the famous ‘Surgeon’s Photograph’, to a set of strange sonar readings and the alleged sightings on Apple maps. Each account compounded the mystery surrounding the creature. There were so many sightings, so much apparent evidence, but there were also a whole host of hoaxes and make-believe reports. We needed more information. Cue a ‘fact’ finding mission!
MATHS
The group undertook a research task, compiling comparative information for a collection of cryptids, namely the Yeti, the Beast of Bodmin Moor, Bigfoot, and of course, Nessie itself. They used their ICT skills to compile a database of ‘facts’ for each creature, including its size, place of origin, year of earliest sighting and even their number of limbs! This comparison showed that Nessie was much larger than her monstrous counterparts, and as such, should be much easier to spot! So, why are sightings of Nessie so infrequent, and so fleeting? Maybe the answer was in the Loch itself…
GEOGRAPHY
As part of their exploration of the Loch Ness Monster myth, the pupils had already employed their map skills to locate the loch and orientate themselves with its location relative to where they live. This involved starting in their local area and moving outwards, locating themselves first within their village, then relative to the city of Manchester and its landmarks, then within the wider North West, then in England, relative to the position of Scotland, before honing in on Inverness, then moving towards the Loch. We discussed the prehistoric geology of the area, and how shifting landmasses had formed vast ranges of high peaks and deep lakes. We discovered that the loch is over twenty miles long and measures 230 metres at its deepest point. Plenty of room, then, for even a large creature to hide. How would one explore such a vast and murky body of water? That’s where our geo survey learning came in handy!
Pupils undertook a study of SONAR technology, beginning with a look at echolocation in animals. They learned all about how bats use sound to ‘see’ their surroundings. Through this, they garnered an understanding of the process of emitting sound waves and analysing their echoes in order to understand both locational and directional data. Pupils then explored the ways in which scientists, technicians and geo surveyors have employed this concept in their SONAR technology. Using the Get Kids into Survey exploration poster resources, they explored a busy offshore scene, where the hydrography technology they had studied was being put to use in a range of scenarios. They learned how boats use SONAR to map underwater features, and in this case, how that technology could be used to unlock the secrets lurking beneath Loch Ness. It became clear that plenty of scans and explorations had taken place on the lake, some claiming to disprove the existence of Nessie through lack of findings; others claiming to have either spotted the creature itself, or found lairs where the monster might easily hide. In 2018, we discovered, scientists embarked on an eDNA analysis of the loch, and found a considerable presence of eel DNA – sparking the idea that an as-yet unidentified species of giant eel might live in Loch Ness. It was beginning to look like geo tech might be the best source of concrete information!
ART
Having looked into the ‘evidence’ behind the mystery of the Loch Ness Monster, we decided to have some fun with the hoaxes! The notorious ‘Surgeon’s Photograph’ from 1934 endured for sixty years before being revealed as a fake; a cardboard and plasticine model attached to a toy submarine. In that spirit, pupils used modelling clay to create the classic shape of the creature, then painted their models a grainy grey. After that, they took their replica monsters to a Reception class water tray and, employing some trick photography on tablet devices, captured images that would give the Surgeon’s Photograph a run for its money!
THE GRAND FINALE
At the end of the week, the group revisited the question that started it all: do you think the Loch Ness Monster could really exist? What began as a resounding ‘no’ had turned into a tentative ‘maybe’, as a result of all the analysis, stories, technological studies and geological exploration. So, we decided to imagine that the monster was real for the afternoon! Each pupil was given a character, and wrote a script in-role that would form part of a news broadcast, detailing their encounter with the monster. In no time at all, news anchor Gabby Bigmouth and field reporter Harry Scoop were ready to report the sightings of Frankie McDougal (SCUBA gear factory owner), Captain Scans (SONAR boat captain), and Geoff Dairy (milkman), as well as the scientific findings of Dr Knowsalot!
The group enjoyed this cross-curricular project immensely, and learned a great deal about the application of practical geography skills and geo tech in exploring the world in all its intriguing wonder. As a result, they spent time studying the other Get Kids into Survey exploration posters, including the city scenes, forestry and mining, and the CSI poster – with its own mystery that they loved to solve! This project demonstrated the importance of engagement and excitement when it comes to making complex ideas accessible and interesting to younger children – something that the Get Kids into Survey initiative works hard to achieve with all its resources and activities.

26th February, 2020 – Nidderdale (sheep land) North Yorkshire, England
Hello friend!
Well…Elly and I – are two sisters on a mission to Get Kids into Survey! That’s the point! Many of you already know us from our family history. Click here to read about that! There are two Ball’s or is it three or even four?
First things first, WE NEED YOU! We have taken a different approach to what we do. We are funded through industry! We set up Get Kids into Survey by chance through our passion to make the GEOSPATIAL WORLD more ‘on-it’ when it comes to marketing! Our sponsors for GKiS are one man bands to multi million dollar organisations – everyone can have a say! The money received goes into design, print and strategic marketing communications in order to keep the posters FREE – you only have to pay postage.. I did try to keep the postage free but [oh boy…] postage once cost me in excess of £1,500 one month! Outch!! I had to swallow it! So we decided that we had to charge that part. Sorry!
Where are we: first #GetKidsintoSurvey is here to:
“Inspire future geospatial experts!” Bringing young people into the exciting world of survey through pioneering content and engaging experiences”
HERE ARE SOME THINGS WORTH SHARING THIS MONTH:
Elly and I met Claire Edwards from The Geospatial Commission (feel free to drop her a note) – the Geospatial Commission (UK Government) are on a mission to maximise the value of geospatial data and to help the growth of the digital economy. We are super excited to collaborate – our aim is to work with governments around the globe to maximise the Geospatial Industry. We will keep you posted on developments!
In October 2019 we launched a pilot called “Survey Fest”. This is where we bring local survey firms and manufacturers together to educate children – Alison Watson from COYO, Elly and myself decided we would take matters into our own hands and start ‘something’ that could be ‘franchised’ in the future. Something local communities all round the world could deliver EASILY! And the ball has started to roll….
Speaking of Alison – if you don’t know her already – you must! Alison has got the Survey Curriculum into schools known as DEC. Alison already has two schools in North America, 2 in Asia and over 100 in the UK. We are proud to be working alongside her and her team.
The NSPS are looking for funding to get Alison over to North America to do some talks and are looking for support – contact Tim at NSPS for further details.
Back to Survey Fest – we are planning to launch the next one as ‘one’ day at Newcastle University, UK – July time. The idea is to roll out a few more like this in designated areas then roll it out as a ‘franchise model’ / ‘pack’ so schools can hold their own – anywhere in the world! Here is what Topcon has to say. Here is what Civil Engineering Surveyor had to say
We launched the new website – see here for details – this will be the HUB for the Geospatial Community Globally. We will house all sorts of content on here and have a strategy to develop this into one useful resource for you, your businesses, schools, parents and kids. With one aim “to inspire and educate” – non of this boring corporate stuff.
We have tightened up our process with Brand Ambassadors – in order to strengthen the brand ambassador community and help promote these guys who are truly AWESOME advocates for our industry – fancy applying? Click here for details.
For those who don’t know – we will be launching our “GEO Squad” comic book for Christmas 2020 and are looking for sponsors for that. Sponsors can either sponsor the ’strips’ (which go into POB USA and Civil Engineering Survey UK) or the activity pages in the comic book itself (We will have a mock up soon to show you) – the comic book will be 5 chapters/ 40 Plus pages + 10 activity pages. Send me an email if you are interested elaine@getkidsintosurvey.com
GEO Squad will be an educational comic that teachers, parents and surveyors alike can use to educate and excite the younger generation! Clever ah!
We are designing ‘lesson plans’ for each poster – coming soon – for teachers to use in the classroom (downloadable from the website ‘resources’ page)
Each poster now has ‘Q&A’ downloadable sheets – see here under ‘Quizzes’ – Notice the little questions on the footers of each poster? The answers are now downloadable and usable for parents, kids and surveyors!
We are working on a directory/glossary of ‘words’ to help kids and the general public better understand surveying terminology. Some are proving difficult as it isn’t cohesive across the globe. Hmm….We’ll get there.

Posters for Twenty Twenty
What posters are coming in 2020 you ask?
Well, as we mentioned before Christmas, this year we wanted to have a more environmental focus and look, not just at what surveyors do, but what would the world look like if surveyors didn’t exist. As some of you will know, this is the foundation of our comic book as well.
Of course, we set the theme of our posters and announce a release date however these posters wouldn’t be here with out the help of the industry, without the support of you and your company. We have already had a great response from our Utilities poster and are looking for a release of the US version by February. We need just two more US sponsors to make this happen. Will it be you?
Utilities UK and Australia will be next followed closely by a very important Environment focused poster which will showcase how surveyors look after and monitor the earth, it will be complete with land slides, volcanic eruption, uncontrollable weather and coastal erosion as well as a look at our environmental impact with plastic and other issues.
After we have recovered from the conference madness we will look to deliver a very special poster in the Summer months. This poster is called City Clean up and is based on our comic book city in the future where surveyors have become extinct. Sponsors of this poster will be seen as ‘super heroes’ coming to ‘clean up’ the city showcasing how surveyors keep our cities safe, hazard free, monitor buildings and pipes and also the important role they play in construction and the whole make up of the city scene.
Our final poster of 2020 will see us go back to one of the coldest places on the planet, this time to the Arctic where we will focus on climate change and what it means for the world and our future. What kind of jobs surveyors do in the Arctic and why it is so important.
This year, not only are we releasing our posters as normal BUT we are also working with our very talented writer and teacher Mat Sullivan and our partner Class of Your Own to develop lesson plans with our posters so that teachers can really get stuck in and kids can get the most out of them. Stay tuned for updates on this.
Gosh! I can’t believe how fast this year has flown by and all the crazy things we have done since I started doing this full time in February. It doesn’t seem real.
Last month we trialled our pilot SURVEY Fest program with Alison Watson from Class of Your Own. Let me tell you, that was a craaazy time! And then most recently we have released our European Offshore poster and soon will release the US version. Now I am starting to put together our plans for 2020 – poster releases, lesson plans, classroom activities, comic strips and more.
But first, back to SURVEY Fest…
SURVEY Fest! The Pilot
Soo as I mentioned in my last update, we joined forces with Class of Your Own. You know Alison Watson who is bringing surveying curriculum into schools across the globe? Thats right! She’s amazing and we are so lucky to be partnered with her and her company. So with our partnership we decided create a program that could link industry with education. A one day event that could be held at schools where industry professionals could run surveying activities and inspire the next generation. Last month we trialled it. We held the first one in a High School in Manchester, England for 200, 11 year olds. We had activities like ‘Roman Surveying’ using body parts to measure, ‘Floor Planning’ of classrooms using measuring tapes and Disto lasers, ‘Setting Out’ and ‘Guess the Height’ using a total station. My my it was one BUSY day and as you can imagine we were quite exhausted by the end of it.

So how did it go?
17 amazing surveying professionals come together on the day to run 6 very different activities for the students at St Ambrose Barlow RC High School. We had a lot of energy, some amazing successes with kids really showing great enthusiasm and enjoying something a bit different. As with any trial we also had some things that didn’t quite work like the size of the groups of kids and the length of time given for some of the activities. All things we can work on for the release of the program for sure. I can tell you that we learnt a LOT and all in all we have now created a great foundation to work from. Building a new program for schools is always going to be challenging but we are so incredibly lucky to have such a great founding team helping us.
Pictured above: Gareth Hughes, Topcon – Katie Holt, ICES, Craig Macdonell, University of Glasgow – Alison Watson, Class of Your Own and a Year 7 class from St Ambrose Barlow RC High School.
We plan to work and develop the activities with ‘Class of Your Own’ and our Founding Members to create a package that can be used for all schools (in conjunction with industry), around the world.
The idea is simple. We just need schools to come forward and host a SURVEY Fest day, and a group of SURVEY Fest Ambassadors (industry Volunteers) to run the activities on that day. We create the program.
As we are still in the early development stages of this program we would love any feedback and suggestions about how we run SURVEY Fest. If you are a school who are interested or you are industry wanting to be a SURVEY Fest Ambassador/volunteer in your local area then please let me know: elly@getkidsintosurvey.com.
Back to ‘Get Kids into Survey’ and our Offshore Poster!!
We did it! Our European Offshore poster landed in Norway in time for the annual Norwegian Offshore Forum for Survey and Positioning (NOSP) dinner last week! We had some incredible support for this poster. I can’t thank Celina Thom and NOSP enough – they made an outstanding contribution of over £5,000 on behalf of their sponsor companies who have each donated to NOSP for the betterment of the survey industry in Norway. WOW – This is HUGE for the industry and we are so grateful for the generosity and help to produce this poster.
Elizabeth Swann, Project Surveyor of Subsea 7 (pictured here) gave us some amazing feedback and input into this poster. We also had incredible support from Helen Atkinson from the The Hydrographic Society in the UK. We cannot make this material and inspire the next generation without the help of the community. You are all crucial in the making of the next generation of surveyors and industry professionals. Just imagine the talent we are bringing to the industry by reaching out to kids at a younger age. We might not see it for years, but believe me – we are doing it! Together! You can now order this poster on our website.
Our US version of this poster is almost ready. In fact, there is still some time to help us with sponsorship if you want to get involved. Please email me if you are interested.
Up Next!
Poster Update
2020 is upon us and we have some amazing things coming. January will kick us off with our Utilities Poster. We have one coming out for each of our regions, Australia, Europe/UK and the USA. If you want to sponsor then get in touch with me asap!

Please don’t hesitate to contact me to collaborate and bring your ideas to life.
Comic Upate
November 2019 brought us to the end of our first chapter of the GeoSquad and you’ll be glad to know Episode 1 of Chapter 2 will be out in January! If you have missed the first chapter you can catch up on our website. Here, you can also find out which magazines print for us. Our comic book is written by the very talented Mathew Sullivan FRSA; teacher, speaker, educational consultant and author of children’s fiction and educational literature. With that being said Mat is not only working on the comic book for us but he is working to produce lesson plans and classroom activities that tie in with both the comic and our posters. Stay tuned for more updates on this soon. We are super excited.
Website
Since my sister Elaine came up with the first poster idea 2 years ago we have been living on the Elaine Ball Ltd website which has been great, but I can tell you one thing for sure, we are no longer a campaign. We are planning some big things and it’s time for ‘Get Kids into Survey’ to officially go it alone. Next month will see us soar into a whole new world. Watch out! We cant wait to show you our new website soon to be revealed.
Thats it for now.
Until next time,
Elly
TUC 18, Intergeo and partnering with Class of Your Own
Hey Guys,
Sorry it has been so long. But here we are, back in action and ready to share some updates.
Intergeo. SURVEY Fest. Geo Squad Comic and more…
Before I jump into that… did you see our video from TopoDOT User Conference where we held our first STEM event with the best kids ever? I will always hold onto the hugs I got that day. Ryan Swingley my new best friend was fantastic on the day too and together I think we smashed it.
Kids were given an activity where they had to go to every booth, they had to ask a question and also find something in the poster and give its grid reference as the answer. For example at the Trimble booth the kids had to find the SX10 in the Civil’s poster. There was a real life SX10 near the booth so they knew what to look for. They then had to ask the staff what it does and in return they gained stickers. It was a lot of fun.
News from Intergeo!
What didn’t happen at Intergeo! Biggest shout out to the amazing Daniel Katzer and Intergeo Team who blew us away when they offered us a 6′ booth at the largest Geospatial conference in the world! We couldn’t believe it nor would we ever turn it down. Thank you Daniel, it truly was amazing to be exposed to the global community and have so many people show their interest and support in our initiative. We even had meetings to discuss translating the poster into other languages… Stay tuned.
At Intergeo we also caught up with our generous US Industry magazine supporters POB. POB have been publishing our Geo Squad comic for us for the past 4 months. We are two episodes away from the season finale. Make sure you stay up to date. We will be releasing a full 30 page comic book next Spring complete with curriculum for schools. More on this coming soon.
Our Education Partner
We teamed up with Class of Your Own Limited (‘COYO’) back at London’s GEO Business Show in May. An award-winning education consultancy specialising in the Digital Built Environment and Infrastructure. COYO created the ‘Design Engineer Construct!®’ (‘DEC’) teaching and learning programme with a corresponding suite of accredited qualifications, workshops, challenges and student engagement programmes which have been delivered to UK schools/colleges since its inception.

COYO works in partnership and collaboration with schools, universities and industry organisations to provide transformational STEAM education opportunities for young people and their teachers, giving relevance to single subject academic courses at a critical time in students’ career considerations.
So, how do we fit in you ask?
SURVEY Fest! The Pilot
Get Kids into Survey and Class of Your Own bring you SURVEY Fest! A one day event for schools to embrace all things surveying, it is also a place where industry meets education. Younger students (10-12 years old) will be exposed to surveying activities during the day, get to interact with real world surveyors, consultants and other industry experts as well as get inspired by our industry.
We pilot our first SURVEY Fest next week with the help of over 10 different companies, 23 surveying/geospatial individuals who will help shape the future of SURVEY Fest events. Once we have trialled our theory we will officially launch the program before the end of the year. It will then be rolled out in DEC schools across the country in 2020. Please get in touch if you wish to be involved and would like more information for future events.
Many thanks to the following for your contribution and support:
Looking forward to a great first pilot! If you are interested in sponsoring and supporting a SURVEY Fest at a DEC school near you, please get in touch.
Thanks for reading.
Until next time,
Elly
